Citizens of Strawberry Point,
On the evening of July 19th strong storms moved across NE Iowa and Clayton County in
particular. These storms caused devastating damage in towns to the north of us and a major
power outage throughout NE Iowa. The City of Strawberry Point had a power outage that was
caused by Allamakee-Clayton having several substations down because of the storms so no
power was coming into the city. Our generation plant was brought up on line but was only able to
serve a little more than half the town because of a switch issue which we have been working on
getting rectified for the past couple week. While we were lucky to have power to over half the
town we 100% understand the frustration for those who didnt have power...and yes I was one of
those who didnt have power so I understand the frustration...I want to say that I am grateful for
the safety of our citizens and town compared to what we have all seen happened to our north.
While the frustration we feel for the power outage is understood, this event also shows that our generation plant when properly
functioning for the entire city is a valuable asset we have. Yes we will get this completed so the
entire town can have power. If we didnt have the generation plant NOBODY in our town would
of had power until this morning. I want everyone to know that we are sorry for the inconvenience
that was experienced last night I want everyone to keep in mind that this could have been a lot
worse and we need to be thankful it wasnt.
I want to extend a special THANK YOU to Alan Wessels, Jon Becker and Karl Ommen for the
long hours and total dedication they have shown to the city of Strawberry Point and its citizens.
Mayor of Strawberry Point
