UPDATE--Cary Gentz March 13 Email PFC Scott Gentz, PFC Matt Jennerjohn, and PFC CJ Johanns are doing well. Their tour is half over now and, while they are still dedicated to their mission, they are ready to come home. All three Privates are still located at FOB Kalagush in the Kunar Province. The area is somewhat in a mountainous region and fairly close to the Pakistan border. All 3 men room together on the base in a dorm size room with thick cement walls. They say the food is pretty good but they miss REAL milk. They have received many care packages and appreciate all the treats so much. Their days and nites are spent training the Afghan Army and on missions into the mountains that can last from 12 hours to 24 hours or longer. With their crazy schedules, all 3 have found it difficult to sleep. Downtime is spent watching movies or playing video games. There have been several attacks on their base by the taliban. Luckily, there have not been any fatalities but some facilities were destroyed or damaged. On base, there is a MWR Center (Military Welfare Resources) with many computers the guys can use anytime. Because of this, all of them have been able to keep in touch with family through facebook on almost a daily basis. Occasionally, they get to Skype and get to see and hear friends and family back home. Scott and Matt have been home for their 2 week leave. CJ will be home for his leave soon. The weather has been much better in Afghanistan than in Iowa. They have seen a light snow once or twice this winter but is usually fairly warm during the day. Recently, it has rained a lot. Right now, they plan to be home by July 28th and all 3 plan to be in college this fall. The Privates and their families appreciate all the support they have received from the community. They have stated many times it keeps them going when it gets tough over there. |
